Why Protein Matters on Ozempic, Wegovy (and What Most People Get Wrong)
Medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro are changing how people manage diabetes and weight.
One of the most noticeable effects is reduced appetite.
For many people, this feels helpful as eating less becomes easier, and weight loss often follows.
But there’s a less obvious issue that comes up regularly in clinic:
Protein intake often drops significantly.
And this can have important consequences over time.
What Happens to Your Eating on GLP-1 Medications
GLP-1 medications work by:
reducing appetite
slowing gastric emptying
increasing feelings of fullness
In practice, this often means:
meals become smaller
some meals are skipped
food choices become more convenience-based
As intake decreases, the quality and composition of what you eat becomes more important.
Why Protein Matters
Protein plays several key roles, particularly when energy intake is reduced.
Maintaining muscle mass:
Without adequate protein, there is a risk of losing muscle alongside weight loss.
Supporting energy and function:
Low protein intake may contribute to fatigue and reduced strength.
Providing structure:
Protein helps create consistency in meals, even when appetite is low.
What I Commonly See in Practice
protein intake is lower than expected
breakfast is often skipped
meals are inconsistent
food choices are based on convenience
These patterns are common and reflect appetite changes.
A Practical Approach
Rather than focusing on exact numbers, start by including a source of protein at each meal.
For many people, breakfast is a useful place to begin.
Examples include:
yoghurt or a smoothie
eggs
chia protein puddings
simple, repeatable meals
The goal is consistency, not perfection.
When Appetite Is Low
On days where appetite is low:
smaller portions are fine
simple foods are often better tolerated
something is better than nothing
Having a few differnt default options available can help reduce decision fatigue. One trick is to pre-prepare options so you can have these ready, depending on what you feel like on the day.
Bringing It Together
GLP-1 medications change how people eat.
As intake decreases, what you eat matters more.
Protein becomes an important part of maintaining muscle, supporting energy, and creating structure within a reduced appetite.
It does not require a perfect diet, but it does benefit from awareness and planning.
