World Diabetes Day 2018. Diabetes Concerns Every Family
November 14 is World Diabetes Day.
The theme for 2018 Is “Diabetes Concerns Every Family”.
A common concern people have is just how are they going to manage to eat, and how are they going to manage to feed the family around their “Diabetic Diet”.
Here’s the thing. You don’t need to eat a “diabetic diet”. You don’t need to shop, prepare, cook and eat separate meals to what the rest of the family are eating.
People with, or without diabetes can, and should eat a healthy diet.
This includes:
Enough food to not be hungry
A nutritionally adequate diet
A predominantly plant based diet, that includes vegetables and fruit, nuts, seeds, grains and legumes
Enough protein for satiety and muscle maintenance/ building
Healthy fats
High fibre, low glyceamic index carbohydrates in appropriate quantities
A healthy relationship with food, avoiding over-restriction
Focusing on healthy food and exercise behaviour, rather than a focus on weight
Eating well with diabetes isn’t just for November 14th.
