Easter, Easter Eggs and a bonus Easter Egg
This weekend is Easter, which has different meanings for different people. For many it involves days of not heading into the office. For me, this involves getting outdoors, lots of activity and lots of good food!
Easter
As with any festive periods, time with friends and family includes meals together, and gifts of the food variety. Chocolate Easter Eggs and hot cross buns often feature on this list.
So how does someone with diabetes get through this period?
Easter Eggs
Firstly, it's not useful to hear the words "Should you be eating that?", or "Is that good for your diabetes?". What's eaten occasionally won't have a significant impact on overall diabetes control, so not judging family or and friend's food choices will be appreciated.
The Easter break lasts for 4 days. So enjoy those days, rather than enjoying the next 4 weeks consuming left over treats.
Eating mindfully has so many benefits. You can read about the process of mindful eating here.
A bonus Easter Egg
An Easter Egg in the world of computer software, digital media, movies, DVD, etc is and intentional inside message or secret feature. This maybe an additional track on a DVD, or level on a game which requires the user to find, hence requiring an Easter egg hunt.
I saw a patient recently, and his "Easter egg" was looking at his dietary intake and eating behaviour as a long term goal, and realising that his quick fix approach in the past was not useful or sustainable. His Easter egg was consistency.
Sometimes clients spend much time and energy looking for the Easter egg (the solution, or next level). The hunt for the Easter Egg can be helped by the skill of a dietitian who can find out where they are hiding.
By the way the Easter Bunny usually leaves me 90% cocoa Easter eggs, which I try to eat mindfully.
